A poll released on Monday showed Brazilians overwhelmingly favored the hypothetical resignation of both President Dilma Rousseff and her vice-president Michel Temer, followed by new presidential elections. Just over 60% of respondents said that scenario would be the best way out of the crisis, although no such solution is stipulated under Brazil’s Constitution.

The embattled president is facing the like-hood of impeachment proceedings being opened against her after the Lower House of Congress voted to send the process on to the Senate where the members are expected to conduct a final vote May 12 to decide whether to open the impeachment proceedings.

A vote in favor of such would immediately remove Rousseff from her position for up to 180 days while the proceedings are in progress before a final judgment. In such an eventuality, Temer would take over the presidency.

However 25% of respondents said they would prefer to see Rousseff continue her mandate, but only if the government forms a new coalition pact with the opposition. Just 8% of respondents said Rousseff’s impeachment, followed by her substitution by Temer, would be their preferred solution.

The Ibope poll also revealed that 15% believe that a system of authoritarian government would be preferable to that of a democratic one, while 40% said democracy is the best option.

The Ibope polling agency conducted interviews with 2,022 people in 142 cities nationwide on 14-18 April. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.

Considering all the crap they squeezed into this constitution, you would have thought they would have foreseen a bad government that needed early elections..... after all, they'd been ruled by the military and yet still seemed to give so much power to a single role in their government.

Before the Military handed power back to the civilians in 1985, they warned the people that it would be just a matter of time before the civilians screwed up again. Their warning was so accurate, it could well have been made yesterday...... and it is pretty clear that they have always understood the mindset of the politicians and their lack of ethics far better than the people ever did.
