Scarce encouragement for the ocean freight industry from the Chinese New Year

In a severe display of the weak demand undermining the containerized ocean freight industry, the latest data from Xeneta reveals carriers blanked more than six times the number of sailings on the main Asia to US West Coast corridor leading up to Chinese New Year as they did in the equivalent period of 2019, just before the global ´pandemic.

Falklands Museum receives £60,000 donation from Consolidated Fisheries Limited

The Falkland Islands Museum & National Trust (FIMNT) received a significant donation of £60,000 from Consolidated Fisheries Limited (CFL) on January 11 to assist in the construction of the Lookout Gallery & Exhibition Hall, a new building for the museum to display items which have no space in the Historic Dockyard Museum.

BAS and WWF “Walrus Detectives” project with satellite surveying to understand the Arctic marine mammals

This week British Antarctic Survey and World Wide Fund, WWF, are inviting the public to become ‘walrus detectives’ and get involved in the Walrus from Space project to help with vital research to enable a better understanding of these Arctic marine mammals.

Spanish court greenlights extradition of Uruguayan torture doctor

Spain granted the extradition of Uruguayan physician Carlos Suzacq Fiser to face criminal charges in the South American country for his alleged participation in torture sessions during the military dictatorship (1973-1985), during which he advised the inquisitors when to stop or when to continue without killing the victim.

Mujica wants a common name, flag, and anthem for the region

Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica has submitted a proposal to the governments of Argentina, Chile, and Brazil, whereby regional integration would include a common anthem, flag, and unified documents for regional travel. The initiative would also provide for some professionals to be allowed to practice in other countries without revalidating their university degrees.

Residents evacuated, lake navigation restricted due to fire in Chubut

Around 60 people have been evacuated from their homes in the town of El Hoyo in the Argentine province of Chubut while 135 firefighters were deployed together with three hydrant planes and a helicopter to face the flames having gripped the Currumahuida hill since Sunday afternoon, it was reported.
