Provincial elections in Argentina: ruling FdT wins only 1 province out of 4

The opposition Together for Change (Juntos por el Cambio - JxC) celebrated three victories in provincial elections in Argentina on Sunday: Governor Gustavo Valdés of the UCR (a JxC member) celebrated in Corrientes, former Governor Alfredo Cornejo won the open primaries in Mendoza and looks poised to returning to the provincial helm later this year but in San Luis, former Governor Claudio Poggi shocked Governor Alberto Rodríguez Saa's candidate Jorge Fernández. On the other hand, the Peronist Frente de Todos (FdT) of President Alberto Fernández won by a landslide in Tucumán. Lieutenant Governor Osvaldo Jaldo became Governor-elect.

Honduras wants to join BRICS bank

During her six-day visit to China, Honduran President Xiomara Castro formally asked BRICS' New Development Bank (NBD) Chairwoman Dilma Rousseff for the Central American country to join the entity, it was reported in Shanghai. A technical delegation of the Honduran government will travel in the coming days to initiate the process.

Uruguay edge Italy for U-20 World Cup football title in Argentina

Uruguayan U-20's 'Celeste' is the new World Champion of the world. Luciano Rodríguez headed home a small box mix-up four minutes from the end to give the South American team their first Under-20 football World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Italy in La Plata, Argentina.

Lula concerned over Assange's extradition to the US

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva has voiced his concern over the imminent extradition of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from Britain to the United States to stand trial for espionage. Lula insisted Assange's arrest was against freedom of the press and the defense of democracy.

Canada wildfires smoke reducing solar power and New England summer heat

Solar power generation in the northeast United States is tumbling by more than 50% as a result of the smoke from eastern Canada wildfires. On Thursday ISO New England, the operator of the grid, said solar power generation in New England was 56% below last week during times of peak demand.

French minister warns against rushing EU-Mercosur deal

France's Junior Trade Minister Olivier Becht expressed his concerns said this week during his visit to Brazil about concluding the EU-Mercosur deal too hastily. While his country does want a deal concluded between the European Union and South America’s Mercosur, Becht warns against entering into it too quickly, without assurances on environmental and social issues.

Colombian gov't, ELN sign 6-month truce

The Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) Friday signed in Havana a 180-day “national”, “bilateral” and “temporary” ceasefire effective from August 3, it was reported. The UN and the Catholic Church will supervise compliance.
