Australia to purchase US nuclear submarines as AUKUS grows stronger

Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese of Australia and Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom joined US President Joseph Biden Monday at a San Diego naval base to discuss the terms under which the South Pacific Island will purchase nuclear-powered submarines as part of the AUKUS defense strategy to neutralize China's expansion in the region.

Amazon fires grip 90% of the area in first two months of 2023

According to a report issued Monday by the Fire Monitor, an initiative of the Annual Mapping Project of Land Use and Land Cover in Brazil (MapBiomas) in partnership with the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), the Amazon biome concentrated 90% of its areas with fires, representing 487,000 hectares. In the first two months of 2022, the area totaled 654,000 hectares. In the country's six biomes - Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Pampa, and Pantanal - there were fires over 536,000 hectares.

Technician with little political background to become Uruguay's new health minister

Anesthesiologist Karina Rando will take over from Daniel Salinas Monday as Health Minister of Uruguay, thus replacing the official who took center stage during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was reported in Montevideo. Salinas explained his resignation was for personal reasons to avoid further public exposure, particularly to anti-vaccine groups, and to devote himself to his profession as a neurologist.

Argentine Navy rescues injured sailor off South Georgia Islands

The Argentine Navy rescued from the oceanographic fishing research vessel (BIPO) “Victor Angelescu”, 90 miles off South Georgia Islands, a 55-year-old man who suffered a crushing trauma to his right leg, reported Clarin. The operation involved the icebreaker ARA Almirante Irízar.

Argentina's industry grows 6.3% YoY in January

Argentina's industrial output recorded a 6.3% interannual growth in January of 2023 and 9.6% against the same month of 2019, the Secretariat of Industry and Productive Development reported. It was the second-highest January, only surpassed by 2018. Against January 2022, the sectors that grew the most were Food and Beverages (+9.1%), Automotive (+24.8%), Metal Industries (+8.9%), and Metal Products (+15.2%).

Nicaragua breaks up with the Holy See

2022 Was a Boom Year For Falklands Squid and Finfish Fleets

Fisheries authorities in the Falkland Islands have said that 2022 was a bumper year for the squid and hake fishing fleets licenced by the territory. Sixteen ships caught a remarkable 101,166 tonnes of loligo squid; a catch that was exceeded only in 1989 when 118,120 tonnes were landed, although that record catch was achieved by almost three times as many ships.
