Monsalve will remain in custody until Tuesday's hearing

A judge in Santiago Friday adjourned until next Tuesday the arraignment hearing of former Interior Undersecretary Manuel Monsalve, who has been charged with allegedly raping a member of his staff. Whether he would also be held accountable for the abuse of power he is believed to have exerted to conceal the facts is to be decided at another stage. In the meantime, Monsalve will remain in custody at an Investigative Police (PDI) detention facility after being arrested on Thursday at his Viña del Mar home.

Falklands remembers losses at the battle of Coronel

The Falkland Islands also remembers those involved in the naval battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile with the loss of 1,600 lives. In effect a memorial tablet is dedicated in Stanley’s cathedral to Rear Admiral Christopher Cradock and the Officers, Warrant Officers and Men of HMS Good Hope and HMS Monmouth lost at Colonel on 1 November 1914.

Falklands launches first telecommunication survey, large response is expected

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) is asking businesses, charities, and residents of the Falklands to take part in a telecommunications survey, which is being run in conjunction with Cambridge Management Consulting (Cambridge MC).

France wants Mercosur-EU deal not signed

France will not be signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), the Russian news service Sputnik reported Thursday. In fact, Paris will do its utmost to block it.

Milei first world leader to meet Trump post Nov. 5 elections

Argentine President Javier Milei Thursday became the first foreign leader to meet US President-elect Donald Trump after the latter's victory in the Nov. 5 elections. They got together at the Republican's Mar-a-Lago complex in Florida during a CPAC (Conservative Political Action Convention).

Port Miami cruise industry, Fiscal Year 2024 marked a new record

The port of Miami has announced a new record of passengers for the cruise industry, which totaled 8,233,056 travelers in Fiscal Year 2024, (October 1, 2023 to 30 September 30), equivalent to a 12.79% increase in cruise passenger, compared to its previous record of 7,299,294 passengers in Fiscal Year 2023, points out Cruise Industry News.

Falklands’ citizen objects to the cancellation of parades on the King’s birthday and Battel Day

Gerald Cheek a Stanley citizen, much respected and knowledgeable of Falklands’ history has written an open letter, published in the Penguin News, greatly concerned and objecting to the cancellation of parades on important celebrations for the Falklands calendar. They are the sovereign’s birthday, 14th November, and on Battle Day, when 110 years ago on 8th December 1914, the Royal Navy destroyed a powerful German naval squadron ready to take over the Islands. It was also the great first British victory of WW1, and both events mark the closenessof the Falklands with the Royal Family and the UK.

Chile: Monsalve arrested – arraignment hearing set for Friday

Former Chilean Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve was placed under arrest Thursday to face rape charges after allegations in this regard by a member of his staff forced him to resign on Oct. 17, three days after the complaint was filed.

Boluarte and Xi Jinping inaugurate Chancay megaport in Peru

Presidents Dina Boluarte of Peru and Xi Jinping of China inaugurated Thursday the mega-port of Chancay, some 40 miles north of Lima. The structure, built with financing from the Asian country, is expected to revolutionize South America's Pacific Ocean trade. The opening took place within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
