Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi picked Tamara Paseyro, previously the director of Social and Urban Integration at the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Ordering (MVOT), to become the new Minister of Housing, replacing Cecilia Cairo following her resignation amid a days-long scandal regarding unpaid taxes on her residence in Montevideo’s Pajas Blancas area.
Paseyro -like Cairo, a member of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP)- holds a degree in Social Sciences and has extensive experience in housing-related public policies. She served as Director of Social Policies at the Municipality of Montevideo (2020-2025), advised the National Housing Directorate, led the National Relocation Plan (2010-2015), and managed the Neighborhood Improvement Program. In addition, her background includes the Montevideo City Evaluation and Monitoring Unit between 2005 and 2010.
She is to be sworn in during Tuesday's Council of Ministers meeting.
Cairo first resisted leaving her post despite the public embarrassment for Orsi while pledging to regularize her home's construction and overdue tax payments spanning 20 years, until mounting pressure left her no choice. She is expected to reclaim her seat in the Lower House.
