  Set of six stamps dedicated to South Georgia unique shallow marine environment

  

  Shadowed beneath South Georgia’s rugged mountains and glacial valleys lay a rich and colourful seascape of plants and animals. This shallow marine environment has received surprisingly little attention since it was first studied during the Discovery Expeditions in 1925. As South Georgia is situated just south of the Polar Front, where warmer waters from the north meet colder Antarctic water from the south, the region is home to a unique assemblage of South Atlantic and Antarctic animals.

  South Africa will have a new multi-purpose polar research vessel next season

  

  The South African 30 years old research and supply ship “SA Agulhas” made her last ever call to King Edward Cove in South Georgia Island on January 15th. She will be replaced by a new icebreaker currently being built in Finland next season, reports the South Georgia Newsletter.

  HMS Protector cuts through Antarctic ice and visits remote research bases

  

  HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship, has cut through the ice floes of Antarctica for the first time. The icebreaker arrived in Antarctica for the first time two weeks ago and is following up important survey work for shipping in the region with visits to remote research bases locked in the frozen continent.

  HMS Protector reaches Antarctica, visits Uruguayan and Argentine bases

  

  HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's new ice patrol ship, has arrived in Antarctica for the first time after her long sail south from Portsmouth. Her arrival, via Montevideo in Uruguay, coincided with the centenary of the Royal Navy's Captain Scott reaching the South Pole.

  British explorer becomes first woman to cross the Antarctic continent

  

  British explorer Felicity Aston has reached Antarctica's Hercules Inlet, becoming the first woman to cross the continent alone. “Congratulations to the 1st female to traverse Antarctica SOLO.V proud,” her UK support team tweeted late on Sunday.

  US and Russia joint team to inspect all foreign installations in Antarctica

  

  United States and the Russian Federation will send a joint team to inspect foreign stations, installations and equipment in Antarctica from January 23 to January 28, 2012. The inspection will be conducted pursuant to the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 and its Environmental Protocol.
