    Bachelet replaces top economic officials: dispute over Chilean mining policy

    Nicolás Eyzaguirre was named minister of finance, replacing Rodrigo Valdés and Jorge Rodriguez takes over from Céspedes.

    Chilean President Michelle Bachelet’s top economic officials resigned on Thursday after the cancellation of a major mining project, weakening her center-left coalition before November elections. Finance Minister Rodrigo Valdes said in a news conference some members of Bachelet’s government had not shared his sense of urgency to spur growth and attract investment to the world’s top copper producer.

    Abortion under certain circumstances finally becomes legal in Chile

    Women in Chile will be allowed to seek an abortion when their life is in danger, when a fetus is unviable or when a pregnancy results from rape.

    Chilean Constitutional court on Monday ruled that a law legalizing abortion in certain cases is constitutional, a win for President Michelle Bachelet’s ruling coalition and for groups that have campaigned for years against the country’s strict ban.

    Mining companies considering expansion in Chile as copper price recovers

    S&P downgrades Chile's rating, for the first time since 1990

    Falling commodities prices (copper) have severely hurt the export-dependent economy, while a number of corruption scandals have sapped confidence.

    Credit ratings agency S&P downgraded Chile's long-term foreign currency rating to 'A+' from 'AA-' on Thursday, the country's first downgrade since the 1990s, as weak business confidence and low prices for key export copper have eaten into fiscal revenues.

    Chile lowers growth forecast in 2017; June data showed surprise deflation of 0.4%

    Minister Valdes lowered the outlook for 2017 growth in domestic demand, a measure of household, business and government expenditures, to 2.5% from 2.8%.

    Chile's government has cut its forecast for 2017 economic growth to 1.5% from 2.25%, Finance Minister Rodrigo Valdes said on Monday as the long-awaited recovery remains elusive.
