  Cyclone in southern Brazil causes death, floods and destruction

  

  Some twenty-one people have been killed as a consequence of the torrential rain and winds caused by a cyclone in southern Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul neighboring Uruguay and Argentina. Local authorities said it was the state's worst-ever weather disaster given the number of deaths so far and the thousands left homeless.

  Alarm: dredging industry extracts a million dump trucks of sand from the sea each day, UNEP report

  

  The first-ever global data platform on sand and other sediment extraction in the marine environment finds that the marine dredging industry is digging up 6 billion tons per year, the equivalent of more than 1 million dump trucks per day. This is significantly impacting biodiversity and coastal communities.

  Extratropical cyclone kills 4 in southern Brazil

  

  At least four people were killed in Brazil's southeastern State of Rio Grande do Sul after an extratropical cyclone hit the area Monday leaving hundreds of homes without electricity, Agência Brasil reported.

  The latest version of the Government of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands Biosecurity Handbook is now available online. The Handbook details the procedures which are in place to help reduce the risk of harmful non-native species and disease entering the Territory, along with the steps in place to detect them and limit their spread should they arrive.

  Peru: State of Emergency around Ubinas volcano extended

  

  Peru's Government extended for another 60 days starting Monday the State of Emergency decreed around the erupting Ubinas volcano in the Moquegua region, some 1,250 km south of Lima, it was published Sunday in El Peruano (Official Gazette).

  “El Niño” arrives in Argentina

  

  Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a report stating that the El Niño phenomenon had arrived in the country after water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean remained above those considered normal, thus triggering an atmospheric response to the warming.

  Iceland resumes whaling after temporary ban

  

  The government of Iceland announced whaling was to resume effective Sept. 1 after banning the practice two months ago. The new measure sparked rage among environmentalists concerned about the endangered species. However, more effective hunting methods and equipment need to be used, the authorities said.

  Denmark to donate over US$ 22 million to Amazon Fund?

  

  Brazil's Environment Minister Marina Silva Wednesday said Denmark might donate R$ 110 million (US$ 22.4 million) to the Amazon Fund between 2024 and 2026, in exchange for which the South American country should pledge to fight deforestation, Agência Brasil reported.
