  Falklands lawmaker visits friendly Caribbean nation, Trinidad and Tobago

  

  Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, MLA Teslyn Barkman, made an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago from 22-23 May. Fresh from her presentation at the Regional Seminar of the Decolonization Committee held mid-May in Venezuela, and later visits to Caribbean nations, ahead of the main C24 meeting in New York in June,

  Future Falklands leaders invited to the 12th Commonwealth Youth Parliament

  

  The 12th Commonwealth Youth Parliament will be held in Wellington, New Zealand, 2-5 September 2024. The Falkland Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) would like to invite expressions of interest in representing the Islands at CYP 2024.

  Falklands: Consultation work to be undertaken on salmon farming

  

  The Falkland Islands Government has agreed to dispose of the claim brought by Unity Marine Limited by mutual consent, and on 27 May 2024, the Chief Justice issued the Order as agreed by the parties. The claim sought to challenge the decision made in March 2022 that arrangements should be put in place to prevent large-scale salmon-farming from proceeding in the Falkland Islands. Amongst other things, the Government had previously given an expectation that there would be a full public consultation on the issue prior to a decision being made. The Government accept that a full public consultation should be held, before a further decision is made on the issue.

  UK: Sunak pledges to reinstate compulsory service

  

  British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Sunday that if he wins July's snap elections he will bring back conscription whereby all 18-year-olds would be required to either join the military full-time or volunteer one weekend per month with community organizations such as the police or National Health Service (NHS).

  Falklands condolences to the family of Britain's greatest swimmer

  

  The Falkland Islands Stanley Leisure Centre are sending condolences and thoughts to the family and the people who knew MBE David Wilkie who sadly passed on Wednesday. MBE David Wilkie opened the swimming pool here at Stanley Leisure Centre on the 4th of February 1990!

  Falklands launches program to modernize anti-discrimination legislation

  

  The Falkland Island Government is embarking on a work program to modernize the Falkland Islands equalities legislation and further protect every individual in the Falklands from discriminatory practices and behaviors. The long-term aim is to introduce the Falkland Islands' first comprehensive legislation against discrimination, whilst ensuring the Falkland Islands meet their international obligations and commitments made in the Islands Plan 2022-2026.
