    Falklands: Consultation work to be undertaken on salmon farming

    In neighboring Chile large scale commercial aquiculture is a booming industry

    The Falkland Islands Government has agreed to dispose of the claim brought by Unity Marine Limited by mutual consent, and on 27 May 2024, the Chief Justice issued the Order as agreed by the parties. The claim sought to challenge the decision made in March 2022 that arrangements should be put in place to prevent large-scale salmon-farming from proceeding in the Falkland Islands. Amongst other things, the Government had previously given an expectation that there would be a full public consultation on the issue prior to a decision being made. The Government accept that a full public consultation should be held, before a further decision is made on the issue.

    UK: Sunak pledges to reinstate compulsory service

    British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Sunday that if he wins July's snap elections he will bring back conscription whereby all 18-year-olds would be required to either join the military full-time or volunteer one weekend per month with community organizations such as the police or National Health Service (NHS).

    MLAs to UN C24 conference: “Falklands have a lot to give the world in fisheries and science”

    MLA Barkman is meeting delegates from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua to strengthen relationships, as well with other small islands and developing states.

    The Falkland Islands lawmakers, MLA Teslyn Barkman and MLA Gavin Short will represent the Falkland Islands at the upcoming United Nations Decolonization Committee or C-24 conference in New York at the beginning of June.

    Falklands launches program to modernize anti-discrimination legislation

    Falklands have a strong history of protecting the rights of those that live and work in the Islands

    The Falkland Island Government is embarking on a work program to modernize the Falkland Islands equalities legislation and further protect every individual in the Falklands from discriminatory practices and behaviors. The long-term aim is to introduce the Falkland Islands' first comprehensive legislation against discrimination, whilst ensuring the Falkland Islands meet their international obligations and commitments made in the Islands Plan 2022-2026.

    UK's not too generous attitude towards Overseas Territories higher education students

    Currently, eligible students from British Overseas Territories qualify for Home Fees status and can apply for a tuition fee loan. However, they are not eligible to apply for maintenance loan support
