  EC makes public list of countries with yellow cards for involvement in illegal fishing

  

  European Commission (EC) is urging European countries to impose trade sanction on Belize over illegal fishing, while warning Curacao that it may be next. The EC also urged European Union governments to hit Cambodia and Guinea with the sanctions, cautioning South Korea and Ghana that they, too, may be next in line.

  Strong drop in Uruguay fisheries exports in 2012; Nigeria becomes main market

  

  Uruguay fisheries exports last year totaled 79.768 tons valued at 189 million dollars which is a considerable drop from 2011 with 102.500 tons and 236 million dollars. White croaker and hake were the main export items and Nigeria displaced the European Union as the main market.

  Falklands’ aquaculture advances with development of brown trout pilot farm

  

  One of the Falklands leading Seafood Companies, Fortuna, has invested in a pilot brown trout farm facility in the Falkland Islands. The project is lead by Simon Hardcastle, a Falkland Islander with experience of fish farming both in Scotland and in earlier projects in the Islands.

  Galicia companies involved in sales of undeclared fish catches: tax evasion close to 14 million Euros

  

  The first four ship owners summoned by the Court of Marin, Galicia, northwest Spain admitted to having incurred in fraudulent tax practices in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Pontevedra Criminal Crimes prosecutor accused the fishing vessel owners of fraud totaling 13.7 million Euros, from the sale of undeclared fish catches from the cooperative San Miguel de Marin

  Global Environment Facility (GEF) CEO Naoko Ishii approved a project coordinated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to improve the health and sustainability of tuna fisheries worldwide by reducing illegal catch and supporting related marine ecosystems and species.

  Spanish flagged trawler catches fire on reaching the port of Montevideo

  

  A Spanish flagged trawler returning from fishing in the Falkland Islands caught fire early Monday morning as it was docking in the port of Montevideo. The cause of the fire which was rapidly controlled by Uruguayan fire brigades is still unknown according to the navy spokesperson Gaston Juansolo.

  Russia, Ukraine and China are being blamed for a failure of plans to protect almost 3 million square kilometers of ocean in Antarctica.   NASA solves the mystery of a “city of lights” in the South Atlantic night: jiggers

  

  When in December 2012, the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center and the NASA Earth Observatory released a new map of the Earth as it appears at night they “found something fishy off the coast of Argentina” but now the mystery has been solved. About 300 to 500 kilometers offshore, a city of light appeared in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. There are no human settlements there, nor fires or gas wells. But there are an awful lot of fishing boats.
