Croatia president to visit his “Chilean-Croatian” peer and Magallanes Region

Croatian president Zoran Milanovic is expected next week in Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile, where he has been declared “illustrious visitor” given his position and the fact he is visiting Magallanes Region where a large Croatian community has been living for over a century.

Lula to announce some of his future ministers Friday

Brazil's President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva is expected to announce some of the names that will make up his cabinet once he takes office on Jan. 1 on Friday just before the quarterfinal football match between the South American country's national team and that of Croatia at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Putin reported having exit plan to Venezuela if Ukraine bid fails

Russian leader Vladimir Putin was reported to have an exit plan for Venezuela, should he fall from grace in Moscow if his country does not succeed militarily in Ukraine. Argentina and China were also said to have been under consideration but were eventually discarded.

Man hanged in Iran for violence in post-Amini protests

A man has been executed by hanging in Iran following his indictment for his participation in the nationwide protests since the Sept. 16 death of young Mahsa Amini while in morality police custody for not wearing the veil properly.

CFK tests positive for COVID-19, Puebla Group Summit adjourned

Argentine Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK) tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday, after which all her engagements were called off and a gathering of Puebla Group leaders scheduled for later this month in Buenos Aires has been rescheduled, it was announced.

Former Guatemalan President and VP convicted in corruption probe

Former Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina (2012-2015) has been sentenced to 16 years in prison alongside then-Vice-President Roxana Baldetti, in the so-called “La Línea” case involving an illicit association and customs fraud, which eventually led to their fall from office.

Xi arrives at Saudi Arabia to cement the “China/Arab cooperation in a new era”

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for a three-day visit, where he is expected to attend the China-Arab States Summit plus a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

EU deforestation bill threatens Latin America and African countries

European lawmakers and EU member states inked a deal on Tuesday, December 6, to ban the purchase of products such as cocoa, coffee, and soybeans that contribute to deforestation, increasing the pressure exerted on Brazilian exports. The list also encompasses palm oil, wood, beef, rubber, and derivate products like skins, chocolate, furniture, and paper.
