    Ascension Island MPA; satellite data suggests conservation success likely

    Ascension Island's: home to one of the largest and healthiest green turtle rookeries in the Atlantic and a million seabirds breed and forage on its shores

    If United Nations goals are met, 10% of the world’s oceans could be marine reserves by 2020, but it has been suggested that many of these reserves will represent protection on paper but not in practice. However, new research trialling remote satellite monitoring of illegal fishing activity in the protected waters of Ascension Island from the Oxford Program of Sustainable Oceans suggests that here at least these “paper park” fears are not fully supported by evidence.

    NOAA “flying laboratory” scheduled to circle St Helena Island

    SHG understands that the NOAA aircraft will undertake three circuits over the Island at different altitudes, before heading off to the South West coast of Africa.

    As part of an international study to be able to deliver more accurate weather forecasts across the South Atlantic, a United States NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) “flying laboratory” is planning to operate over St Helena this coming weekend, to undertake a series of weather-related measurements.

    According to St Helena's Exco “the current RMS St Helena Shipping Schedule comes to an end in April 2016, just under 12 months away”.

    British Overseas Territory St Helena only link with the outside world, currently by sea, will be coming to an end in May 2016, when the proposed official opening of the airport which is being built by South African contractors, will be taking place, according to the 12 May meeting of the island's Executive Council.

    HMS Dragon calls at the remote Tristan da Cunha Island

    The Type 45 destroyer left Portsmouth on 27th October 2014 for a routine seven-month Atlantic Patrol Tasking deployment.

    The Royal Navy's Atlantic Patrol Tasking HMS Dragon called at Tristan da Cunha, one of the most remote islands on the planet, on the latest stage of her Atlantic deployment. There is no land to the west for more than 2,000 miles, South Africa is 1,750 miles to the east and the nearest inhabited locality is another British Overseas Territory 1,510 miles away.

    Spain tried to abort US Congress bill in support of Gibraltar's right to self determination

    Republican Congressman George Holding, who sponsored the bi-partisan resolution, made public the letter from the Spanish ambassador.

    Spain tried to persuade US politicians to drop an initiative calling for the House of Representatives in Washington to formally recognize Gibraltar’s right to self-determination. The plea was contained in a letter from Spain’s ambassador to Washington, Ramon Gil-Casares, to Republican Congressman George Holding, who sponsored the bi-partisan resolution.
