  Pompeo in Buenos Aires at counter-terrorism summit offers US$ 7 million for info on Hezbollah leader

  

  U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Friday in Argentina that the United States has imposed financial sanctions against a Hezbollah militant group leader suspected of directing a deadly bombing in 1994 of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured hundreds.

  Meeting in Buenos Aires of the Scientific Sub Committee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission

  

  The elected government of the Falkland Islands reported on Friday that the Scientific Sub Committee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission met in Buenos Aires on 17 and 18 July 2019. The SAFC was first established in 1990 and this was the third meeting to take place since the reestablishment of regular meetings in 2018.

  Macri paves way for Hezbollah to be deemed 'a terrorist organisation' in Argentina

  

  The Argentine Government has created the Public Registry of Persons or Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and its Financing (RePET), a tool whereby Hezbollah can be included. So far, local authorities adhered to the list penned by the United Nations, where Hezbollah is not included. President Mauricio Macri also decreed a day of national mourning to mark the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Israeli Social Welfare Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires. In a third measure, Macri gave the victims of that attack 180 days to file for monetary compensation from the state.

  Former Argentine President De la Rua buried in private ceremony

  

  Former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua was laid to rest Wednesday during a private ceremony at a cemetery in the Pilar area, some 50 kilometers northwest from Buenos Aires. De la Rua, who ran the country between December 1999 and December 2001, had died of cardiac and other complications at the nation's capital on Tuesday. He was 81.

  The Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo released this week the identity of the son of a young couple disappeared while under arrest during the bloody Argentine 1976/1983 military dictatorship. Javier Matías Darroux Mijalchuk thus became the 130 child, now a full grown man, to have been identified by the human rights group.
