Pinochet's top lady spy and alleged torturer arrested in Australia

Australian police have arrested a Chilean woman living in Sydney over her alleged involvement in a kidnapping during the military rule of Gen Augusto Pinochet in the South American country. Adriana Rivas worked as a secretary for the infamous chief of Chile's secret police force, Manuel Contreras.

UK and Chile sign a new trade continuity agreement with post Brexit in mind

The United Kingdom and Chile signed on Wednesday in Santiago a trade continuity agreement that will see British businesses and consumers benefitting from preferential trading arrangements with Chile after Britain leaves the European Union. Ambassador to Chile Jamie Bowden and Chilean Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero stamped the agreement.

Banning trawling for cuttlefish catching triggers the “large squid war” in Chile

Chile is in the midst of what has become to be known as the “cuttlefish or large squid war”, between industry and artisanal fishermen and the government's intention of protection and conservation of the species. The Chilean Congress recently passed a bill regulating the catch of the giant squid and specifically banning trawling, with perpetrators facing fines of some US$ 38.000.

Cruise vessels allowed to operate along the Chilean coast smaller ports

Chilean cruise operators and travel agencies have praised a bill approved by Congress, the Coastal traffic law, which allows cruise vessels with a 400 passenger capacity or more, and even smaller if there are no Chilean similar vessels, to sail along the country's ports.

Bomb blast in downtown Santiago de Chile injures five people

A blast at a bus stop that wounded five people in the centre of the Chilean capital on Friday was described as a “terrorist act” by the government. A Venezuelan couple was hospitalized with facial and leg injuries after handling a package containing the device at the bus stop on the busy Vicuna Mackenna Avenue, authorities said.

Bill only allowing jigging to capture giant squid triggers controversy in Chile

The Chilean Association of Fishing Industry (ASIPES) has expressed its “absolute concern” following the approval of a bill modifying the General Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, limiting the capture of the giant squid (Dossidicus gigas) to jigging or hand lining.
