  Former president during one of Colombia's bloodiest periods has died

  

  Former Colombian President Belisario Betancur, who attempted to broker peace with Marxist rebels during his administration, died on Friday at the age of 95, the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota hospital said.The hospital did not provide a cause of death, but media reports said he had been admitted with kidney problems.

  Bomb in Colombia city of Barranquilla kills seven officers, wounds 41

  

  At least seven police officers were killed and 41 others wounded on Saturday when alleged drug traffickers detonated a bomb at a station in the Colombian city of Barranquilla.   Colombian president confirms peace talks with FARC; first round Oslo in October

  

  Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has confirmed his government is holding exploratory talks with the country's largest rebel group, the FARC. In an address on state TV, Mr Santos said he was fulfilling his “duty to seek peace”. Media reports say a deal on further talks was reached in Cuba with the help of Venezuela and Norway.
