    Former President Evo Morales has been deposed as leader of Bolivia's Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) after a party congress over the weekend chose Grover Garcia to chair the political movement. The winner is aligned with incumbent President Luis Arce Catacora, a former ally of Morales' who has become his deadliest enemy in recent years. García stems from the Single Confederation of Bolivian Peasant Workers Union (CSUTCB) and was also mayor of the municipality of Tiraque.

    The Lower House of Bolivia's Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP) Thursday failed to approve the country's accession to the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) after Speaker Israel Huaytari adjourned the session during which the matter was to be debated. Lawmakers loyal to former President Evo Morales are said to oppose the “Protocol of Accession of the Plurinational State of Bolivia to Mercosur” initiative.

    Bolivia's Plurinational Constitutional Court (TCP) Friday ruled that indefinite reelection is not a human right and therefore former President Evo Morales was banned from running for office in 2025. Under the TCP's new consideration, such a right can now be legally restricted, which reverses a criterion approved by this same court in 2017.

    Evo says Argentina supports Bolivia co-hosting 2030 football World Cup

    Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Chile are bidding to co-host the 2030 event, 100 years after the first World Cup, with the final at the same venue (Montevideo's Centenario Stadium).

    President Alberto Fernández told Evo Morales that the country currently holding the football World Cup will support Bolivia's bid to co-host the 2030 finals together with Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
