    Gibraltar prepares for European elections because of Brexit delays

    On Sunday Chief Minister Fabian Picardo took a call from PM Theresa May and maintained a “friendly and positive” conversation on latest Brexit developments

    The Gibraltar Parliament unanimously passed legislation to enable Gibraltar to vote in the European election in May should this become necessary because of delays to Brexit. The parliament approved an amendment to primary legislation to ensure the electoral register for the European Union election is ready despite the short window of time available.

    Spain has long criticized Gibraltar's low-tax regime, while the tiny Overseas Territory argues it is a crucial part of its thriving, services-based economy.

    Spain and Britain on Monday signed a fiscal treaty on Gibraltar as Brexit nears to fight tax fraud and money laundering via the British overseas territory. Hailed as “massively significant” by Gibraltar's leader, Fabian Picardo, it was signed separately by Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and David Lidington, Prime Minister Theresa May's effective deputy.

    Gibraltar's legal status is a matter of fact, not opinion

    Gibraltar is listed on the list of non-self-governing territories maintained by the United Nations.

    In its proposal for post-Brexit, ‘visa-free travel’ the European Council on Friday has described Gibraltar as a “colony of the British Crown.” HM Government of Gibraltar is grateful to the Prime Minister for her comment that such a description is “completely unacceptable.”

    Gibraltar urges a “stop Brexit completely” if PM May's Brexit deal stumbles

    Spain will not agree to the draft deal until the Gibraltar issues are clarified, minister Borrell said following a meeting with EU ministers

    Spain has said it will not agree to the draft Brexit withdrawal deal without clarity over how talks on the future status of Gibraltar should be handled. Foreign minister Josep Borrell insisted that talks about the territory were “separate negotiations”.

    CM Picardo said: “This Protocol contains absolutely no concessions on sovereignty, jurisdiction or control. We would not have accepted it if it had”

    The proposed Withdrawal Agreement published on Wednesday by the United Kingdom and European Union makes it clear that its terms, including the transitional period, will apply to Gibraltar. According to a release from the Gibraltar government “this was the number one priority of the Cabinet and of the Government and it has been achieved. It means that Gibraltar will not crash out of the European Union in March 2019 and that things will largely remain as they are until the end of 2020”.
