British Labor MP Jim Dobbin has filed an early day motion calling on the House of Commons to condemn the actions of the Spanish Guardia Civil crew that led to “an armed stand-off” with Royal Navy vessels in Gibraltar waters last week.
Spain is clutching at straws in trying to pretend that the annual United Nations Fourth Committee consensus decision is somehow something new or that will restart the Brussels Process, the Gibraltar Government said on Wednesday.
The idea that one day Spain would share sovereignty in Gibraltar is a non-starter, according to Spanish Civil War expert and Madrid based journalist William Chislett. In Gibraltar for the first international Literary Festival, Mr Chislett gave his opinion on the developing cross-border political strife and also commented on the current political climate surrounding Spain.
The European Commission has received no ‘well-founded’ complaints alleging Gibraltar’s failure to cooperate on tax, financial and money-laundering matters, according to Michel Barnier, the Commissioner for Internal Market and Services. In response to questions in the European Parliament, Mr Barnier also confirmed that Gibraltar was fully up to date with the transposition of EU legislation in all three fields, according to a report from the Chronicle.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo is in the UK to attend Gibraltar Day in London and various other events this week. CM Picardo is accompanied by several other Gibraltar Government ministers who will also participate in the scheduled events, including Finance Minister Albert Isola, Education and Justice Minister Gilbert Licudi and Neil Costa, the Minister for Tourism, Public Transport, Commercial Affairs and the Port.
Spain will not seek support from the Ibero-American summit to call on the UK to resume the bilateral dialogue on Gibraltar’s sovereignty as Argentina has done traditionally with the Falklands/Malvinas issue, according to Spanish diplomatic sources reported in the Madrid media.
Gibraltar Under-19 national football squad left the Rock en route to be the first team representing Gibraltar in a European Championship Qualifier. The first stop is in Bulgaria, where the Gibraltar players will prepare with a friendly against the Bulgarian national team. From there, they will travel to the Czech Republic to compete at the European Championships.
Gibraltar accused Spain before the United Nations Fourth Committee of incitement to racial hatred and called for reasonable dialogue urging the start of ‘ad hoc’ talks to resolve issues Madrid has been expressing concern over.
Britain has enshrined, in a written statement to the United Nations, its commitment that it will not enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content. And it has also reaffirmed its sovereignty over Gibraltar and its territorial waters, according to the Gibraltar Chronicle.
Britain’s Conservative Party will stand by the people of Gibraltar “no matter what”. That was the pledge made by Foreign Secretary William Hague on Sunday night as he addressed the Gibraltar reception at the Conservative Conference in Manchester.
