Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo told delegates at the Liberal Democrat party conference in Brighton on Sunday night that Gibraltar was grateful for the support it had received over the years from UK politicians.
The Government of Gibraltar will have a presence at the party conferences of the three main political parties in the United Kingdom this year. The conference season opens this Sunday with the Liberal Democrat party conference which takes place in Brighton from 23rd to 26th of this month.
The upholding of British sovereignty and protecting Gibraltar’s interests are the key issues for Governor Sir Adrian Johns in the current fishing dispute involving Spanish fishermen and the Spanish authorities.
The Foreign Office will fly the Gibraltar flag on Monday, National Day in its building along Whitehall. Foreign Office ministers David Lidington and Mark Simmonds, respectively the ministers for Europe and the Overseas Territories, have said they welcome the raising of the Gibraltar Flag over the FCO in Whitehall to mark Gibraltar Day.
Spain’s Foreign Minister issued a clear threat to Gibraltar in the latest salvo of words in the fishing dispute. Jose Manuel García-Margallo said Gibraltar’s stance in the row would lead to repercussions in other areas affecting the Rock.
The European Commission has told a South West of England and Gibraltar Member of the European Parliament that it has no powers to intervene in the ongoing standoffs at sea between local law enforcement agencies and the Guardia Civil.
