  Falkland Islanders asked on proposals to recommend Marine Management Areas

  

  Falkland Islanders are being asked to comment on proposals to recommend three Marine Management Areas (MMAs) to the Falkland Islands Government (FIG). These areas include some of the Falklands most pristine and vulnerable marine environments such as around Beauchêne Island and the Jason Islands archipelago, and include globally important populations of the Black-Browed Albatross and the Rockhopper penguin.

  Falklands “Time Capsule” to celebrate 250th anniversary of flying the Union Flag in the Islands

  

  As part of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Union Flag being raised by English Commodore John Byron in the Falkland Islands, on 21 January 1765, more precisely on Saunders Island, a ceremonial sod of turf was raised on the site for a “Time Capsule” to be buried.

  Falklands celebrates with several events 250 years of British claim over the Islands

  

  The 250 years since Britain officially claimed the Falklands will be celebrated on a number of occasions this month. Celebrations are being organized in Stanley by members of the public on January 21 and 24 and by Falkland Islands Government on January 23 and 31, along with a ceremony on Saunders Island at Port Egmont on January 23.

  Falklands: Sea Lion research awarded Shackleton's Centenary scholarship

  

  The Centenary Scholarship which marks the 100th Anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Trans- Antarctic Endurance expedition has been awarded to Dr Alastair Baylis, an Australian scientist, for his sea lion project: “Rediscovering Falklands Ocean Sentinels”.
