Members of the United States Congress are visiting Gibraltar to ‘show support’ for the Rock as they reflected on the close links between Gibraltar and the US. Acting Gibraltar Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia welcomed a delegation from the Congress of the United States to Gibraltar on Monday afternoon before taking them through a series of meetings throughout the course of yesterday.
Labour is “unequivocally committed” to protecting the British sovereignty of Gibraltar, Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry said during a surprise visit to the Rock. Mrs Thornberry was shown around Gibraltar International Airport and the frontier by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, on the back of a long standing promise.
On Sunday Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia leave the Rock for New York in order to attend the session of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, usually known as the Committee of 24.
On the day that the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Joseph Garcia leave for Brussels, the Government of Gibraltar considers that it is important to highlight the fact that Gibraltar stands to receive a total of nearly 60 million Euros in EU funding since the first allocation of such funds was made in 1990. This includes the current program.
Gibraltar top elected officials this week went on a lobbying tour in the United States where they met government officials, visited Capitol Hill, talked trade and strongly defended the British Overseas Territory freedom, self determination and sovereignty.
The Gibraltar Government has sent a complaint to the European Commission about the “disproportionate checks” being conducted by the Spanish authorities on pedestrians entering Spain. It follows the recent build-up of pedestrian queues over the past fortnight, reports the Gibraltar Chronicle.
