October was a busy month for shipping activities in South Georgia with 21 harbor visits to Cumberland Bay and nearly 400 paying passengers visiting, according to the latest edition (October) of the South Georgia News and Events release.
“ M.V.Ushuaia” was the Falkland Islands first cruise ship visitor this season, arriving last Friday morning ready to greet their guests from Natural World Safaris on Saturdays LAN flight. The group of 81 had a chance to spend some free time on their arrival in Stanley, before boarding their ship.
The tourist season in the Falkland Islands opened on Saturday with the arrival of the M/V Ushuaia, which with 84 passengers is typical of the many smaller expedition vessels which pay visits to Stanley and also to some of the outlying islands famous for their abundant wildlife.
Dutch Oceanwide Expeditions reported that 74 passengers and 21 crew members from the Antarctic expedition cruise ship MV Plancius , stranded in South Georgia have been transferred to a rescue ship and are on their way to Montevideo.
The Panama flagged cruise vessel M/V Ushuaia is expected to arrive early next week in South Georgia to pick up the stranded 114 passengers and crew of a similar small cruise M/V Plancius which after experiencing serious propulsion trouble took shelter at King Edward Point Research Station in Grytviken.
