    Brazil halts sizeable rice purchase amid irregularities

    Agricultural Policy Secretary Neri Geller turned in his resignation given his son's ties with a grain trading company

    The Brazilian administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Tuesday canceled a tender whereby some 263,000 tons of rice were to be purchased abroad to make up for the crops lost in the flooded State of Rio Grande do Sul. The decision was made after signs of irregularities were detected in the bidding companies. Rio Grande do Sul accounts for 70% of Brazil's rice production.

    Main shareholders of Brazil's largest meat processor charged with corruption have been released

    The arrests were the latest blow to JBS’s controlling Batista family, which last year signed plea bargain agreements with prosecutors admitting to bribing of politicians

    Brazil’s top appeals court has ordered the release of one of meat processor JBS’ controlling shareholders, Joesley Batista, and Ricardo Saud, a lawyer for J&F Investimentos, which controls JBS. Both were arrested on Friday in an investigation into illegal campaign contributions and alleged bribery of government officials.

    Brazilian meat packing tycoon and two ex agriculture ministers arrested

    Antonio Andrade and Neri Geller, who served consecutively as agriculture ministers under former President Dilma Rousseff, were arrested

    Police arrested a controlling shareholder of meatpacker JBS SA and two former Brazilian agriculture ministers on Friday in connection with an investigation into illegal campaign contributions. Joesley Batista, a member of the family that founded the world's largest meat processor, is expected to be held only temporarily, his lawyer André Callegari said. He declined to elaborate on the arrest order or the investigation.

    Brazil subsidized loans for the 2018/19 agriculture program will reach US$ 58bn

    The government’s farm program offers subsidized loans to finance agricultural commodities and make investments such as in silos and agricultural machinery.

    Brazil's Agriculture Ministry plans to increase funds available to finance the farm sector, an official announced, noting that a decline in inflation has allowed the government to boost funding in a country that is the world’s largest exporter of staples like soybeans and coffee.

    Brazilian congress strikes down new taxes on the domestic soy market

    The country is the world's leading exporter of soybeans

    Brazil's Congress struck down this week a proposal to impose new taxes on the internal soy market after fierce opposition from the country's agricultural sector. An amendment to apply a tax known as PIS/Cofins on soybean sales to some domestic buyers had been removed from a bill to simplify taxation of Brazilian companies abroad that was passed by the lower chamber late on Tuesday.
