The chances for Uruguay of having significant commercial reserves of natural gas and oil are on the increase according to recent reports from US Energy and Geology agencies and published in the Montevideo press.

Falkland Islands exploration company Argos Resources released Monday morning interim results and CEO Ian Thomson told investors that the group is on schedule to be ‘drill ready’ in late 2011/early 2012 to begin off-shore exploration activities in the South Atlantic British Territory.

Uruguay detailed plans to auction 15 offshore exploration blocks on Thursday, part of the energy-short country's efforts to reduce its dependence on imports of oil and natural gas.

Some 900 million barrels of oil have been detected at two basins in eastern Panama, representing a potential contribution to the country’s coffers of 15 billion dollars over 20 years, the National Energy Secretariat announced.

Rockhopper Exploration said on Tuesday an oil discovery in Falkland Islands waters extends to the west of the original well, adding to hopes that the oil find is large enough to open up a new province in the remote South Atlantic.

Brazil’s state-owned BNDES development bank said it planned to provide about 2.55 billion dollars in financing over the next four years to suppliers to the country’s oil and gas industry.

Global oil demand will increase further next year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has predicted. The IEA, which represents the main oil consuming nations, said the increase in crude usage would continue to be driven by emerging economies.

Brazil’s oil reserves, including recent discoveries in deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean, are of a similar size to those found in the North Sea, said a Petrobras exploration official in an interview in London.

Rockhopper Exploration plc announced on Thursday a further drilling of four wells offshore the Falkland Islands. The first of them, 14/10-6, will be the third appraisal well on the Sea Lion feature where the discovery of oil at commercial rate has been confirmed.

YPF Argentina reported Tuesday that its first offshore well drilled in the so called Malvinas basin proved dry. The operation was equally shared with Brazil’s Petrobras and Pan American Energy, a Chinese-Argentine group.
