On Merchant Navy Day, 3 September, the Falkland Islands remember all those merchant seafarers who helped to liberate the Falkland Islands in 1982 and those, past and present, who do so much to keep our waters safe.
Sunday September 3rd, was Merchant Navy Day, an event celebrated in the UK and also in the Falkland Islands, where maritime access is crucial for the life of the Islands. Richard Hyslop, Falklands representative in UK and Europe underlined the significance of the date.
The Falkland Islands is represented at the 25th Annual Red Ensign Group, REG, conference which is taking place in the town of St George's, Bermuda. Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell, delivered the opening remarks and welcomed the overseas delegates attending the conference that the Bermuda Department of Maritime Administration is hosting.
The Buenos Aires Province Senate on 2 August passed a law last week banning British flagged vessels associated with activities in Falkland Islands waters from calling at Argentina’s largest ports.
In the midst of the diplomatic escalation between Argentina and the UK over the Malvinas dispute and the coming 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict, a red ensign Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier (LNGC) docked in Argentina.
No changes are needed in current legislation to bar vessels flying the Malvinas flag from entering Uruguayan ports, but Uruguay also speculates that if the vessels change to the English flag there will be no problems, according to a report from the Foreign Affairs ministry.
