    Brazil's Supreme Tribunal begins to address Lula's case on May 4th

    Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT) has said he remains their candidate despite his legal troubles, which it claims have been politically motivated to keep him out of the race.

    Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) is to vote on a motion starting May 4 that could potentially release ex-president Lula da Silva from prison, the court said. Lula's defense team hopes to overturn a decision by Sergio Moro, a federal judge and head of a key corruption investigation that determined he had to begin serving a 12-year sentence for accepting bribes.

    Sixty Brazilian members of Congress added Lula to their names

    The head of the party, Gleisi Hoffman will now be known as Gleisi Lula Hoffman in official Congress documents and on the electronic voting board

    More than 60 Brazilian members of congress from the opposition Worker's Party have formally changed their names. They have added the name 'Lula', after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was jailed last weekend.

    Lula has until Friday afternoon to start a prison sentence for corruption

    The timing of the order from Judge Sergio Moro, head of Brazil’s huge “Car Wash” anti-graft probe, took Lula’s lawyers by complete surprise.

    Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, front runner in Brazil’s October presidential elections, was given 24 hours on Thursday to surrender to police and start a 12-year prison sentence for corruption. The timing of the order from Judge Sergio Moro, head of Brazil’s huge “Car Wash” anti-graft probe, took Lula’s lawyers by complete surprise. They had been expecting to use legal maneuvers to delay the start of prison at least until next week.

    Supreme Court rejects Lula's petition: must start prison term

    By 6 votes to 5, the court gave its negative verdict to the habeas corpus presented by the defense, which argued that Lula should not yet comply with the sentence

    The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF) decided to reject the judicial appeal filed by former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to appeal while in freedom to a sentence for corruption that remains pending, so the former president should enter the prison and begin compliance of the sentence.
