  South Georgia releases new coin to commemorate Sir Ernest Shackleton

  

  The government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands have released a new coin to commemorate the birth of the famous explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Born on 15th February 1874, Sir Ernest Shackleton wanted to be an explorer from a very early age, inspired by faraway places that he had read about as a boy. At the age of 16, bored by the school curriculum, he went to work in the Merchant Navy.

  South Georgia: Colossal squid features on latest titanium “marine life” coin

  

  The government and treasury of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands have issued two new coins in its ongoing Marine Life series, which features some the most amazing wildlife found in and around the South Atlantic Ocean. The design, which features the colossal squid, is issued in two versions, including titanium, which is tinted to enhance the design.

  South Georgia coin to celebrate centenary of Endurance Expedition

  

  The government and treasury of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands issued a new Crown coin that pays tribute to and celebrates the centenary anniversary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Endurance Expedition. The expedition was named after its ship and is considered by some to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

  South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands coat of arms anniversary featured on new Crown coin

  

  The Treasury of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands have launched a crown coin which marks the 30th anniversary of the territory’s granting of a Coat of Arms by Royal Ascent. The Coat of Arms of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands was granted in 1985, upon the formal creation of the territory.

  South Georgia releases three new coins: one of them to honor Prince George

  

  Three new South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands government coin designs have been released in recent months. The birth of His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge is marked by the release of a coin dated 2013, which is based on a coin originally released the previous year.
