South Georgia plans to expand Marine Protected Areas; could affect krill fishery

The government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, GSGSSI, announced a vast Marine Protected Areas around the Island in February and it is likely there is more protection to come that could affect krill fishing and long-lining, reports the September edition of the South Georgia newsletter.

South Georgia cruise season beats the trend and expects better one in 2012/13

A small increase in cruise ship visitors to South Georgia compared to the previous season bucks the trend of the Antarctic region. In the 2011/12 season tourists to the Antarctic fell by 22%, whereas in South Georgia they increased 8%, according to the September edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

Argentine marine who headed invasion of the Falklands on 2 April, dies

The Rear Admiral who headed the landing and invasion of the Argentine forces in the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982 died over the weekend. Carlos Büsser was under house arrest for his alleged participation in crimes against humanity during the last military dictatorship although he was never convicted.

HMS Edinburgh on South Atlantic patrol; last deployment for Type 42 destroyers

The Royal Navy’s destroyer HMS Edinburgh left on Monday Portsmouth on her final planned deployment. It marks a historic milestone for both the ship and the Royal Navy as it will be the last time a Type 42 destroyer deploys on operations as they make way for the new-generation Type 45 destroyers.

South Georgia issues new stamps dedicated to blue whales

Blue whales are the subject of a new SGSSI stamp issue released on August 31st. The four stamp designs are based on watercolour paintings by artist Kim Chater, according to the latest release from South Georgia News and Events.

Funds from confiscated illegal fish used to combat poachers in Southern Ocean

Funds generated by the sale of fish confiscated from a vessel that had been poaching in the South Georgia and South Sandwich Island’s Fishery Zone (SGFZ) are being put to good use to fight illegal fishing elsewhere in the Southern Ocean.

One longliner and four krill trawlers fishing in South Georgia

Only one longliner remained fishing in South Georgia waters at the end of the season on August 31. Four longliners were fishing at the start of August, but just one remained to complete its allotted fish quota. The others completed their TAC at various times through the month then sailed for the Falkland Islands for catch verification.

Four different “ecotypes” of killer whales spotted in Falklands waters

To many, the killer whale, also known as orca, is considered the panda of the sea (a not-so-cuddly black and white ocean beast). Whale scientists have been particularly busy over the last 20 years studying the killer whale and we now know a whole lot about this species or, as it turns out, possibly several species.
