The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization on Wednesday adopted a new resolution reiterating its position that the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland/Malvinas Islands between Argentina and the UK, must be resolved through peaceful and negotiated means.
On Wednesday 18 June, two elected members from the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, MLAs Mark Pollard and Peter Biggs addressed the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, better known as the Committee of 24.
The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly announced that it is pleased to confirm that MLA Pete Biggs and MLA Mark Pollard will attend and speak at the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) in New York on Wednesday, 18 June 2025.
The Special Committee on Decolonization is set to convene the Pacific Regional Seminar in Dili, Timor-Leste, from May 21 to 23, 2025. This event is part of the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism, which spans from 2021 to 2030.
The position of Overseas Territories, on the United Nations list of Non-Self--Governing Territories was recently discussed in British Parliament. The issue was brought up by Conservative Member of Parliament Blake Stephenson on January 30th session.
On 9 September, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of Ruda’s Statement, the statement delivered by the then Legal Counselor of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador José María Ruda, before the UN Special Committee on Decolonization. His address was a historic milestone in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas.
The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, also identified as C24, currently chaired by Menissa Rambally (Saint Lucia), will undertake a visiting mission to the British Virgin Islands from 26 to 27 August.
While in New York Argentine foreign minister Diana Mondino not only participated in the United Nations Decolonization Committee or C24, claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, but also signed a significant international instrument that should help with the plus 201 mile IUU fishing in the South Atlantic.
