  President Barack Obama on Tuesday telephoned Brazilian head of state Dilma Rousseff to congratulate her on her re-election, the White House said in a statement. Obama “emphasized the strategic value of our bilateral partnership and reinforced his commitment to deepening our cooperation in areas such as commerce, energy, and other priority bilateral issues through our existing strategic dialogues”.

  Yellen warns about the rich-poor gap in the US, at a near 100-year high

  

  Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen warned Friday that the gap between the rich and poor in the United States is widening and has reached a near 100-year high. In a speech at a conference on inequality in Boston, the Fed chair did not mention monetary policy nor the current turmoil in financial markets. Instead, she focused on the widening wealth disparity and how that impacts economic opportunity.

  US unemployment falls to 5.9%, the lowest since July 2008

  

  The US unemployment rate dipped to 5.9% in September, a six-year low, official figure has shown. The rate fell from 6.1% in August and is the lowest recorded since July 2008. US Labor Department also said that employers added 248,000 jobs last month, and the job growth figures for August and July were revised upwards.

  Kissinger wanted to smash Cuba in 1976 for its intervention in Angola

  

  US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger drew up plans to “smash Cuba” with air strikes nearly 40 years ago, government papers obtained by researchers show.   US calls on Argentina “to normalize relations with all bondholders”

  

  While the US State Department again called Tuesday on Argentina 'to normalize relations with all its bondholders’, the government of President Cristina Fernandez deposited a 161 million dollars bond interest payment with a newly appointed local trustee on Tuesday, defying a U.S. judge who held Argentina in contempt of court on Monday for taking illegal steps to meet its debt obligations.
