Imbibed with the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict spirit, the city of Ushuaia decided to elevate the department which dealt with Malvinas Islands issues, to the rank of Secretariat, thus reaffirming the will of Ushuaia residents as the capital of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands.
The mayor of Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego province, extreme south of Argentina honoured the descendants of ten original families that settled in the territory over a century ago. The ceremony headed by Mayor Walter Vuoto, lawmakers and members of his cabinet, took place at the Monument to the Tierra del Fuego pioneers, with the unveiling of a plaque in remembrance of the ten families represented by their descendants.
Ushuaia received 120.000 visitors and 33.000 crew members this last cruise season which totaled 332 calls, according to the results made public by the mayor of Tierra del Fuego's capital, Walter Vuoto.
Ushuaia in the extreme south of Argentina and capital of Tierra del Fuego province celebrated on 12 October the 132th anniversary of its foundation with several activities including a jumbo popular paella for 12.000 people. The gastronomic display was sponsored by city authorities and New San, a maquila group which assembles electronic products in Tierra del Fuego under a promotion system implemented by Buenos Aires.
President Cristina Fernandez publicly congratulated on Friday Walter Vuoto the young elected mayor of Ushuaia, capital of Argentina's most austral province, who together with elected governor Rosana Bertone recovered Tierra del Fuego for the ruling Victory Front, a surprise victory which turns that territory and capital in Kirchnerite strongholds.
