Local authorities and descendants of the Welsh community in Argentine Patagonia gathered Wednesday at the city of Trelew for the celebrations marking the 156th anniversary of the beginning of the Welsh feat in Chubut.
As a day of great celebration, Argentine ambassador in the UK, Alicia Castro described the festivities for the 150th anniversary of Welsh settlers arrival to Patagonia, taking place in Chubut with the attendance of Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones, Argentine cabinet ministers and members of the Welsh-Argentine community.
Argentina's Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernandez and the Presidential Legal and Technical secretary Carlos Zannini led on Monday celebrations in Chubut to mark the 150th anniversary of the Welsh community that settled in the Patagonian province. The event took place in Puerto Madryn overlooking the Golfo Nuevo.
UK ambassador in Buenos Aires John Freeman met with Chubut province governor Martin Buzzi in Rawson to work out the agenda of activities scheduled for the end of the month when Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones is expected to arrive for the 150th anniversary celebration of Welsh immigration to Argentina, reports the local media, Diario Jornada.
Next 28 July Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones will be attending celebrations in the province of Chubut in the framework of the 150th anniversary of the first Welsh settlement in Patagonia, 28 July 1865. An event which in an electoral year in Argentina could become a good opportunity for president Cristina Fernandez to press on the Falkland Islands dispute, according to speculation in the Buenos Aires media.
The Embassy of Argentina in the UK celebrated Independence Day on Thursday, highlighting the importance of national sovereignty and Latin American unity. Before a packed audience of over four hundred people, the Argentine Ambassador Alicia Castro delivered a speech in which she recalled that the aim of the struggle for independence was to unite all the peoples of Latin America.
Argentina and Wales celebrated on Monday at the National Assembly for Wales, in Cardiff, their historical links with a reception especially dedicated to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first Welsh settlers to Patagonia. Musicians from both nations gave a concert and a photography exhibition on the Welsh settlements in Patagonia was inaugurated.
