With winter around the corner and Europe giving priority to energy security over clean energy in German a wind farm is being dismantled to make way for an expansion of an open-pit lignite coal mine.
The world's largest offshore wind farm is now fully operational, 55 miles off the coast of Yorkshire. The Hornsea 2 project with 165 turbines can generate enough electricity to power about 1.3 million homes - that's enough for a city the size of Manchester.
Argentina's YPF Luz - the electricity division of the traditional state-owned oil company - has officially opened its third wind farm, Cañadón León, which is expected to supply 123 MW of renewable energy to the national system, it was reported Thursday.
By Tsvetana Paraskova for Oilprice.com – UK peak-hour power prices for Monday evening through 6 p.m. surged to the highest level in a month due to low wind power generation during the weekend.
The World Bank on Wednesday approved an International Development Association credit in the amount of US$3.5 million and an International Bank for Reconstruction and Development loan in the amount of US$ 3.5 million for the Renewable Energy and Improved Utility Performance Project (REIUP) for Cabo Verde in Western Africa.
Uruguay has become the second country in the world when it comes down to wind-generated electricity, thanks to 43 eolic parks which produce a third (33%) of the electricity consumed nationwide, which has represented savings above US $ 125 million in 2020 alone.
The world's largest working offshore wind farm - covering an area equal to 20,000 football pitches - has opened off the coast of Cumbria, north west England. The £1bn Walney facility already had 102 turbines before the completion of a further 87 earlier this year - dubbed the Walney Extension.
Magallanes Region in the extreme south of Chile is taking advantage of its weather conditions and will convert its wind gusts into energy. With some six million dollars from the National Fund for Regional Development and in coordination with Chilean government owned oil company Enap, a wind farm will be installed in Cabo Negro during the second half of the year.
The International Energy Agency said in its latest report that last year the world's capacity to generate electricity from renewable sources has now overtaken coal, and renewable accounted for more than half of the increase in power capacity.
Japan unveiled a new wind farm off the coast of Fukushima last week. Only thirteen miles offshore from the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power station, the same nuclear station that notoriously attracted the world's attention during the 2011 Japanese tsunami, the new wind farm is expected to produce upwards of one gigawatt from 143 wind turbines. For comparison, the now-inoperable Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant could provide 4.4 gigawatts.
