    BCRA adjusts benchmark interest rate: 78% annually

    It was the first monetary policy rate increase in 2023 and also since September last year

    Argentina's Central Bank (BCRA) Thursday decided to raise the benchmark interest rate by 300 basis points to 78% annually, it was announced in Buenos Aires the day after the INDEC said the Consumer Price Index for the month of February ad grew 6.6% for a year-on-year inflation of 102.5 %, the highest in the last 32 years.

    De Moraes releases another 129 Jan. 8 suspects

    Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre De Moraes has Thursday ordered the release of another 129 people who were in custody for allegedly participating in the Jan. 8 riots in Brasilia. With this new ruling, 294 remain in prison (86 women and 208 men), while over 1,100 have been released, although they will remain under surveillance.

    A Chilean Court Thursday sentenced former Army Brigadier General Orlando Carter Cuadra to 10 years and one day in prison for Dec. 14, 1973, murders of Bautista Van Schouwen Vasey and Patricio Munita Castillo (22) in Santiago. The deceased belonged to the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) political party.

    With the collapse of Credit Suisse, oil prices continue to slide, 10% in a week

    Saudi National Bank already has a 10% stake in Credit Suisse, which precludes them from taking on any more. 

    Oil prices continued their slide on Wednesday after another banking fallout unsteadied the market further. WTI plunged 4.21% on Wednesday, falling below US$ 70 for the first time since December 2021 to US$ 68.33 per barrel ET. Brent Crude fell over 3.94% to US$ 74.40, for a loss of US$ 3.05 per barrel.
