UK implements a U-turn in climate policy and opens largest oilfields in North Sea to exploration and production

The United Kingdom approved the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas in its largest undeveloped field, the North Sea Transition Authority, the responsible regulatory body said on Wednesday.

Spain unable to form a new ruling coalition: regional separatist parties are kingmakers

Spanish Popular Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo fell short of the 176 votes he needed to become prime minister after a vote by lawmakers on Wednesday. Feijioo's conservative Popular Party won the most seats in the July 2023 general election, but he has struggled with putting together a coalition to form a government as he opposes giving concessions to separatist parties.

No agreement reached during Paraná Waterway multilateral meeting

Argentina will continue to charge a toll to barges sailing through the Paraná River Waterway after no agreement was reached Tuesday during a Technical Commission meeting at the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires.

Uruguayan Interior Minister wants DEA back

Uruguay's Interior Minister Luis Alberto Heber insisted Tuesday it would be a wise move to bring back the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to the South American country. Heber made those remarks days after the escape of many drug traffickers who had been granted house arrest.

Canada's House of Commons Speaker steps down after honoring Nazi soldier

Anthony Rota Tuesday turned in his resignation as Speaker of Canada's House of Commons following the recognition as a hero of a former Ukrainian member of Germany's Nazi SS Waffen. He said he would leave his position at the end of Wednesday’s session.

Biden in Detroit supports and joins striking auto workers union

United States President Joe Biden flew to Detroit on Tuesday where he joined members of the striking United Auto Workers , UAW, union on the picket line. The visit is thought to have been the first time a US president has ever joined striking workers.
