    Punta Arenas and Ushuaia inaugurate cruise season 2024/25 next week

    Punta Arenas and Ushuaia are ready for the start of the cruise season which in Chile is scheduled for Saturday 14th September and in Argentina, 17th September. In both cases it is a regional cruise with the “Ventus Australis” along the Chilean straits and channels, but there is great optimism that it could in effect 2024/25 could be a record season.

    Chile's Supreme Court Monday suspended Justice Ángela Vivanco from her bench after she was found to be linked to a corruption case. In the meantime, the process for her permanent dismissal has been triggered. Vivanco may not be the only magistrate to lose her job to the scandal.

    Chile's Senate wants ICC to order Maduro's arrest

    The motion was approved by 21 votes to none against and no abstentions

    Chile's Senate Tuesday sent a note to President Gabriel Boric Font to request the International Criminal Court in The Hague (The Netherlands) to issue an arrest warrant against Venezuela's ruler Nicolás Maduro for “serious crimes that constitute a threat to peace, security and the welfare of humanity.” The Bolivarian leader has been under investigation since 2021.

    FACh triggers alert over unidentified aircraft neat Strait of Magellan

    When the F-5s reached the area there were no signs of the intruding aircraft

    Chile's Air Force (FACh) deployed two F-5 fighter jets from the Chabunco air base in Punta Arenas after unidentified traffic was detected Tuesday at around 7 pm local time in the vicinity. Some Chilean outlets said the alleged intruder stemmed from Argentina but Defense Minister Maya Fernández never admitted (nor denied) the possibility.

    Punta Arenas expects some 170 cruise calls this season, beginning 14 September

    One of the main vessels expected is Majestic Princess, 330 meters long, has a passenger capacity of 3.600, plus 1.340 crew, and is sailing since 2017

    Some 170 cruise calls and an estimated 100,000 visitors are what the Punta Arenas, Austral Ports Enterprise, Epaiustral, is expecting for the coming 2024/25 season. Of these 128 are internationally flagged vessels, while the remaining fifty belong to local Chilean cruise companies, the Ventus and the Stella Australis.

    Chile's Supreme Court orders Jones Huala's release

    Jones Huala was deemed to have served out his sentence by June 14

    Chile's Supreme Court Friday ordered the immediate release of convicted Mapuche leader Facundo Jones Huala of Argentine origin because he had served out his sentence by June 14 and had therefore been “illegally deprived of his freedom.” The Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) activist had been convicted of arson and illegal possession of firearms in 2013.
