  The Antarctic is being melted from below, according to a new study by Nasa - and a type of buried super-volcano may be to blame. The Nasa study adds evidence that there is powerful geothermal activity underneath the ice, creating lakes and rivers below the surface.

  Plunge into South Georgia freezing waters to lobby for marine sanctuaries

  

  The United Kingdom government has been urged to create a marine sanctuary around islands in the South Atlantic which are “virtually untouched by humans”. Fully protecting 500,000 square kilometers around the South Sandwich Islands would preserve wildlife including penguins, seals, seabirds and whales, conservationists said.

  Finnish company sets out conditions for the building of a second pulp mill in Uruguay

  

  Finland's UPM and the Government of Uruguay have signed an investment agreement, which outlines the local prerequisites for a potential pulp mill investment. The agreement details the roles, commitments and time-line for both parties as well as the relevant items to be agreed prior to the final investment decision, reported the Finnish company in a release on Tuesday.

  Europe prepares to have jets fly with an eco-fuel mix from vegetable oil and animal fat plus kerosene

  

  Jets in Europe will soon run on eco-fuel produced from vegetable oil and animal fat. The new fuel will be mixed with traditional kerosene. According to latest reports, planes running on the mixture of renewable and traditional fuel will start flying next year from Geneva in Switzerland.

The eight-year study, called the “Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification” and part of the German-led Bioacid program, finds that juvenile sea creatures will be especially harmed.
