Candidates in General Election in Falkland Islands propose a wide-ranging agenda

Residents of the Falkland Islands are due to go to the polls to elect their new Legislative Assembly on Thursday 9th November 2017. Seventeen candidates are standing for the eight available spots on the Assembly. The Assembly is responsible for the internal government of the Islands and sets the national agenda. It also liaises with the United Kingdom Government on issues of defence and is increasingly actively involved in foreign affairs efforts on behalf of the Islands.

HMS Queen Elizabeth begins last phase of sea trials before end of the year commissioning

HMS Queen Elizabeth has sailed from Portsmouth Naval Base for the first time since arriving at her home port in August. The Royal Navy’s future flagship has embarked on the next set of sea trials to test the £3 billion ship’s capability.

Temer expected to return to work on Tuesday, following prostate surgery

Brazilian President Michel Temer should be discharged today Monday from the Sao Paulo hospital where he had surgery to reduce the size of his prostate, his office said on Saturday. A previously announced meeting on Monday with Bolivian President Evo Morales will be postponed, the Foreign Ministry said.

Brazil wants detailed investigation into Canada's aerospace industry “subsidies”

Canada has urged the World Trade Organization to block attempts by Brazil to trigger a detailed investigation of its aerospace industry to buttress its case that subsidies to Bombardier caused “serious prejudice” to Brazil’s Embraer. The procedural move by Canada comes a month after the WTO agreed to set up a panel to investigate Brazil’s claim that Canada provided harmful aid to the CSeries jet.

UN praises Uruguay's human rights commitment; warns about education dropouts and treatment of adolescents

Uruguay’s commitment to human rights at home and abroad is clear, but the country must address a series of challenges, including “inhumane” prison conditions, widespread violence against women, dropout rate in education, the situation of adolescents in pre-trial conditions and continuing impunity for violations committed during military rule, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said at the end of a two-day visit.
