The Daily Mail has reported that the Royal Navy is to keep old offshore patrol vessels it was due to decommission to ensure it has enough vessels to police Britain's borders after Brexit. This allegedly means the Falkland Islands patrol HMS Clyde, which was to be replaced by HMS Forth from the new batch of patrol vessels and which is scheduled to become active operational next September, will remain in service in the South Atlantic.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was accused of betraying by handing lucrative licenses in the South Atlantic to foreign firms. The row erupted after it emerged that £75million worth of licenses in the South Atlantic have been handed to firms from Norway, Chile and New Zealand, according to reports in the UK media.
Visitor arrivals to the Falkland Islands were up 3.1% compared to the previous tourist season, confirmed Executive Director of the Tourist Board Stephanie Middleton to Penguin News. The Falklands' season ended on April 7 with total visitor arrivals for the season at 57,496. Ms Middleton outlined how, as with last season, it was the expedition vessels that mainly contributed to the hike in numbers.
The Falkland Islands Meat Company - FIMCo - has entered into a supply contract with Ecolog – a key provider for UK Ministry of Defense facilities at MPC/MPA, to provide their high-quality Falkland Islands meats. The contract is for five years, delivering beef, lamb and mutton to the MOD’s and Ecolog’s exacting standards of price, availability and - of course - quality.
The Falkland Islands will be holding a parade to celebrate the birthday of the Queen at Victory Green on Saturday 21st April 2018. The parade will form up at Victory Green at 10.20 hours and Governor Nigel Phillips CBE will arrive at 10.30 hours.
The United Kingdom Ice Patrol HMS Protector is expected this week in Buenos Aires on her return trip from the Antarctica season. The visit is seen as evidence of the renewed and improved UK/Argentina bilateral relations, both politically and in defense issues.
The Falkland Islands also joined Royal Air Force centenary celebrations. Despite poor weather the hangar event held at Mount Pleasant Complex, MPC, to celebrate RAF 100 the Royal Air Force Centenary (April 1) “went off perfectly,” according to spokesperson for the event.
Over the past decade it is has become customary for a newly elected Legislative Assembly in the Falkland Islands to publish an ‘Islands Plan’. As there are no political parties in the Falkland Islands, all eight members of the Assembly are independents. Therefore there is no collective manifesto when elected to office. This has traditionally been addressed via a consensus-based Islands Plan.
To help people in the Falkland Islands to get fitter and healthier, the local hospital will be running a ‘Falklands Obesity Orientation Day’ on Monday 9 April, it was announced by Gilbert House.
The Falkland Islands have been advised by British Forces Broadcasting Services, that during April a series of sun outages which will cause disruption to satellite dish reception across the Falklands.
