The outspoken economist, promising libertarian changes, Javier Milei managed more than 30% of votes, ahead of the candidates from the two coalitions which were believed to have monopolized Argentine politics in recent decades, the opposition grouping with 27%, and the Kirchnerite incumbent coalition 28%.

    Financial Secretary Tracey Prior has handed in her resignation but will remain in the post until the beginning of next year

    The Falkland Islands Financial Secretary Tracey Prior has handed in her resignation, reports the Penguin News. Her resignation is due to personal reasons, confirmed FIG to when contacted by the paper on Wednesday. This is to enable her to spend more time with her young family, and recruitment for her role will be underway in due course said FIG Head of Communications Sally Heathman.

    14 August is Falklands Day and commemorates the first sighting of the Falkland Islands on that day in 1592 by the English navigator and explorer, John Davis, on board his 120-ton vessel 'Desire'.  Davis (1550-1605) was one of the principal navigators under Queen Elizabeth I.

    Falklands Airbridge rerouted to East Midlands Airport, from August 12 to 26

    Due to essential repair work to the runway at RAF Brize Norton, the South Atlantic Airbridge connecting with the Falkland Islands will temporarily fly into, and out of East Midlands Airport (EMA). The final SAA flight into RAF Brize Norton prior to work commencing is scheduled to be the northbound service TOW 2233 due to depart MPC on Saturday 12 Aug. The following TOW 2230 service on Monday 14 Aug will depart from East Midlands Airport.

    The British press is revealing some of the facts surrounding the European Union/Community of Latin American and Caribbean States summit, held in the third week of July in Brussels when Argentina celebrated that in the controversial final communiqué, a reference to the Falklands was changed to Malvinas Islands.

    A successful two-day workshop for the new Overseas Territories Biodiversity Strategy, held in the Falkland Islands concluded successfully last Friday. The workshop led by the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee, in partnership with FIG and representatives from conservation, science, rural business, economic development, tourism and fishing sectors.

Three cities in the region linked by the cruise tourism industry, air transport, and other issues suffered the consequences of the battering of wind, snow storms, flying debris, and the closure of roads, ports, and airports.

    Members of the Falkland Islands Youth Parliament spoke in Legislative Assembly at the end of July, putting forward a motion concerning the mental health of young people in the Falklands, an issue which the Youth Parliament agreed as a group to pursue over the course of a year at the beginning of their tenures.

    Arthroplasty overseas service for Falklands patients with hips/knees problems

    Director of Health and Social Services Tom Bale thanked Mr. John Woollacott, KEMH  Hospital Manager, the principal lead with securing the arrangement

    Spire Healthcare has been chosen by the Falkland Islands Government as the UK private provider for Arthroplasty (hips and knees). It was noted at the Health and Medical Services Committee by Director of Health and Social Services Tom Bale in his report that a paper was recently approved by ExCo, for the approach and funding, of outsourced Arthroplasty for qualifying persons, who suffer chronically, with hip and/or knee issues.
