    The defense of the Falkland Islands with the Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons

    During the Easter holiday period, the RAF detachment in the Falkland Islands continued to deliver air operations in the South Atlantic. One element of the air operations is a Quick Reaction Alert response carried out by the Typhoons of 1435 Flight.

    The 2nd Commons and Overseas Territories Speakers’ Conference (COTSC) has been held at the Anguilla House of Assembly from 3 to 5 April 2023 on the theme of ‘Deepening Parliamentary Democracy in the British Overseas Territories - A Roadmap to 2030’. Falklands was represented by Keith Biles, Speaker for the Legislative Assembly.

    A research expedition in the South Atlantic to further explore the oceanographic fishing scenario around the South Georgia Islands ended “satisfactorily” despite the “extreme” hydro-meteorological, environmental, and topographic conditions of the area, the Argentine Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MINCyT) announced this week.

    President Alberto Fernández called Argentines to “feel proud” and “put the ex-combatants in their rightful place” during the celebration of the 41st anniversary of the landing in Stanley (then renamed Puerto Argentino) by the South American country's troops which kicked off the 1982 Falkland/Malvinas war.

    April 2nd is a special date in the calendar of Argentine events, the country renders homage to the Malvinas Veterans, Fallen, and Families of mostly thousands of raw Conscripts sent by the military Junta 41 years ago, in 1982 to invade and occupy the Falkland Islands. Argentina has been claiming sovereignty over the Falklands, alleging inheritance from once the Spanish empire, and later Argentine governments extended their demand to include “South Atlantic Islands and surrounding maritime spaces”.

    Argentines hold nationwide Veterans Day celebrations to honor the fallen

    Multiple events are to be held across Argentina Sunday marking Veterans Day 41 years after the military Junta's troops landed in Stanley (then renamed Puerto Argentino) thus kicking off the 1982 Falkland/Malvinas War with the United Kingdom.

    Falklands Prison audit outcomes and recommendations published

    Deputy Portfolio Holder for Islands Security, MLA Spink said: “The Elected Members and I are very pleased with the results of the audit from His Majesty’s Prison in Stanley.”

    On Tuesday 28 March, ExCo approved for the publication of the Prison audit outcomes and approved the recommendation to increase staffing at His Majesty’s Prison in Stanley by three officers. The audit was requested by the Falkland Islands Government and Government House as a result of concerns raised during the incarceration of three disruptive and violent prisoners during 2020.

    Falklands, changes made to the provision of Camp Education

    Portfolio holder for Education and Community, MLA Leona Roberts said: “Access to good education is of fundamental importance for everyone in the Falkland Islands”.

    In August 2022 the Falkland Islands ExCo approved a set of recommendations on the way that Camp Education is provided to families. The recommendations were made after extensive consultation with the communities in Camp and in Stanley during the Camp Education Review. A key objective of the review was ensuring that children in Camp and Stanley have the same standard of education.

    Falklands promotes the use of Water Wise

    Using water, a finite resource efficiently has many benefits, not only to consumers but also to the wider Falkland Islands community and environment. Simple behavioral changes such as taking showers instead of baths, turning taps off whilst cleaning teeth, and using watering cans instead of hosepipes can significantly reduce the amount of water we use on a daily basis. This would also save energy, both in homes as well as at the water treatment plant which is great for both saving money as well as for the environment.
