  Siemens and Spain's Gamesa merge to create global wind energy giant

  

  German industrial megalith Siemens and Spanish wind energy giant Gamesa have announced they will merge their wind energy businesses. Gamesa and Siemens announced Friday that they have signed binding agreements to merge Siemens’ wind business with Gamesa, to create a leading global wind power player.

  France wants strong immediate action from European Council if UK votes Leave

  

  French economy minister Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday the EU should act quickly and firmly if Britain votes next week to leave the European Union. Britain’s EU referendum will be held on Thursday, with an EU summit set for a few days later on June 28 at which Macron said EU leaders should take a firm stand with regard to the UK.

  An international Working Group of 23 scientists convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), has evaluated the carcinogenicity of drinking coffee, mate, and very hot beverages.

  Rio under “state of public calamity” with seven weeks before the Olympics

  

  Brazil's Rio state authorities have declared a “state of public calamity” over a major budget crisis, in order to release emergency funds to finance the Olympic Games. The decree authorizes the state to “adopt all necessary emergency measures to ration essential public services in order for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to take place”.

  Argentina “authorizes” Red Cross assessment mission to the Falklands

  

  Argentina extended an authorization to the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, for a technical assessment mission to the Malvinas Islands at the end of the month, to help with the initiative for the identification of the remains of Argentine Armed Forces members buried in the Argentine cemetery of the Islands, according to a Friday official release from the Foreign ministry in Buenos Aires.

  Cameron cancels “Stronger in Europe” rally in Gibraltar following killing of Labor MP

  

  Thursday's “Stronger in Europe” rally at Gibraltar at which UK Prime Minister David Cameron was due to speak, was cancelled at the last minute after Labour MP Jo Cox was shot and stabbed in an attack in West Yorkshire. The news of the fatal attack came shortly after Cameron arrived t the Rock.

  Labor Remain MP killed in north England; Brexit campaign suspended

  

  A British member of Parliament died on Thursday after she was shot and stabbed in a “horrific” assault in her constituency, police have said. Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, north England, was left bleeding on the ground after the attack in Birstall, West Yorkshire. A man was arrested nearby. One eyewitness was reported stating that her attacker shout “put Britain first” at least twice beforehand.

  “Increasingly likely” Sterling would drop further in the event of a Leave vote, warns Bank of England

  

  The Bank of England has warned that uncertainty about the EU referendum is the “largest immediate risk” facing global financial markets. The bank said there were “risks of adverse spillovers to the global economy” from the 23 June vote and it was “increasingly likely” that sterling would fall further - perhaps sharply - in the event of a leave vote, the Bank added.
