There is no land to the west for more than 2,000 miles, South Africa is 1,750 miles to the east and the nearest inhabited locality is another British Overseas Territory 1,510 miles away.

  China to supply Argentina five “Malvinas Class” offshore patrol vessels

  

  Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is expected to sign agreements with China to increase military co-operation, including construction of new warships for the Argentine Navy, during her current state visit to Beijing, according to media reports and Jane's Defense Weekly.

  Uruguay with Pope's blessing to try new approach to human rights and disappeared persons issues

  

  Uruguay will be attempting a new approach to the human rights and disappeared persons issues, a still unfinished legacy from the military dictatorship, (1973/1984) and the decade of armed sedition which preceded the collapse of the country's democracy. The announcement is expected later this month and basically means replacing “truth and justice” for “truth and memory”, following to a certain extent the South African experience.

  UK universities representative visits Chile to foster closer relations

  

  University of Kent Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow visited Chile from 1 to 3 February 2015. Dame Julia, who is also the incoming President of Universities UK, the body representing all UK Universities, had discussions with senior Chilean officials, including the Deputy Minister of Education, Valentina Quiroga.

  Petrobras shares soar 15% ahead of CEO's and senior managers removal

  

  Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will replace the chief executive and other senior managers at state-run oil company Petrobras later this month in an effort to turn the page on the widening corruption scandal. Petrobras shares jumped more than 15%, their biggest one-day gain in 16 years, after Folha do Sao Paulo first reported that Rousseff intended to replace CEO Maria das Graças Foster.

  Uruguay is the 'only' candidate from Latin America and the Caribbean and has the necessary votes to be elected next October non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council beginning 2016, announced foreign minister Luis Almagro. This will be the second time a Uruguay seat at the Security Council, the first was in 1965/66.

  Russian cosmonaut Oleg Guermanovich Artemiev, member of the International Space Station Expedition 40 posted this week a high definition picture of the Falkland Islands taken while orbiting from 400 kilometers above the Earth.
