    Amnesty presses FIFA on Qatar's 'rampant migrant labor abuse'

    “Qatar’s persistent labor reform delays are a recipe for human rights disaster,” said Mustafa Qadri, Gulf migrant rights researcher at Amnesty International.

    Five years to the day since Qatar secured 2022 World Cup hosting rights, Amnesty International says the Gulf nation has done little to “address rampant migrant labor abuse”. Qatar has made pledges for labor reforms and the 2022 World Cup committee has introduced a workers’ charter. But the kafala system of tied employment has yet to be overhauled to ease restrictions on workers’ rights.

    President-elect Mauricio Macri named ambassador to Washington and Montevideo. Lawmaker Martín Lousteau will be Argentina's next ambassador in the US. He will replace Cecilia Nahón, who submitted her resignation on Monday. The appointment was decided after a meeting Lousteau held with the new cabinet chief Marcos Peña and the future Foreign Affairs Minister Susana Malcorra, a Let’s Change statement affirmed.

    Argentina will have a state of the art fisheries research vessel in 2017

    Argentina's Fisheries Research and Development Institute, INIDEP, has signed the contract for the construction of a new fisheries and oceanographic research vessel to be built at the Armon shipyard in Vigo, Spain. The financing for the vessel and refurbishing of INIDEP's offices and labs comes from the Inter-American Development bank with a 30m dollars loan.

    Francis non papal message to Macri: 'a simple matter of protocol'

    There is no tradition of best wishes to the newly elected heads of state, and in fact no Argentine president elect has ever received a 'papal phone call'.

    How come the Argentine born pope Francis did not send a congratulation telegram, or formal message to president elect Mauricio Macri on his victory, has been an ongoing question. But Vatican sources pointed out there was no special reason for that attitude, but merely “a simple matter of protocol”.

    Brazilian executive order to further cut budget spending

    The Central Bank said on Monday that Brazil posted a primary budget deficit of 20 billion reais (about $5.24 billion) in the January-October period.

    Brazilian government said in an executive order published Monday in the Official Daily that it was cutting spending by an additional 11 billion reais ($2.82 billion) this year. The move is part of an effort by the government to a budget deficit target of 1 percent of the gross domestic product, a goal agreed to during the last budget review.
