Chilean president Sebastián Piñera headed on Sunday the steel cutting ceremony for the building of the first, --out of four--, multipurpose vessel, to be incorporated to the country's navy. Also present at the ceremony were Defense minister Baldo Prokurica and the commander in chief of the navy, Admiral Juan Andrés de la Maza.

Construction of the Chilean Navy's new polar ship at the ASMAR Talcahuano Shipyard is 35% advanced according to official information. The ship, being built under the name of Antarctica I project, will replace the Navy's current icebreaker Oscar Viel. She will perform logistic support activities for Antarctic operators, both domestic and foreign, performing tasks such as transporting people and materials, removing garbage and providing food and fuel.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will visit Chile in November and December to attend the activities organized to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Chilean Navy. The Princess Royal will travel in the company of her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
Lockheed Martin Canada will provide and install new combat management systems for three of the Chilean Navy’s frigates. The majority of the work will be done at Lockheed Martin Canada’s facilities in Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. The combat management systems and other equipment will be installed on Chile’s Type 23 frigates.
The Chilean Navy rescued 61-year-old Australian skipper Shane Freeman after his yacht Mushka was knocked down and dismasted 300 nautical miles west of Chile. The Australian was on his way to the Sunday Times Golden Globe race’s start line in the UK in his Tradewind 35 class yacht when the incident happened on 18 February 2017.
Starting this Monday and until 4 May, the Chilean navy is celebrating the Month of the Sea, edition 2016, and has chosen Punta Arenas in the extreme south of the country as the epicenter of the event which includes the visit of president Michelle Bachelet on 3 May.
