    Ecuador and Peru fighting a losing battle with China on giant squid fishing in the southeast Pacific

    The squid catch has increased: in the last five years alone, between 800,000 tons and 1.16 million tons have been caught. China has a declared fleet of 671 ships.

    Giant squid, squid or Dosidicus gigas, measures up to 3 meters in length and can reach 50 kilos in weight. It is one of the main species of the southeastern Pacific Ocean and at the same time it is one of the species with the greatest commercial pressure in the world. Thousands of tons are extracted every month, a large part, from the international waters located off the seas of Ecuador, Peru and Chile. The main player behind that voracious appetite is China: it has a declared fleet of 671 ships.

    Significant drop in prices China is prepared to pay for beef

From 2012 to 2021, China’s importance as an export destination for the five regions in which Brazil is divided grew exponentially, and of the 27 federal states, 21 saw their sales to China grow above the expansion of their sales to the world. In the period, however, the export basket was negatively concentrated around a few primary products.

    Beijing admits balloon over Latin America is theirs

    Beijing said that shooting down their balloon over the Atlantic Ocean was overproportioned and promised to reserve the right to take the necessary measures

    As US defense forces are beginning to pick up the debris from the Chinese balloon downed during the weekend by the Air Force on President Joseph Biden's orders, the Asian country admitted a second such aircraft last spotted over Colombia belonged to them. Biden said Monday that the Pentagon was in contact with the Latin American countries through which the Chinese balloon passed. The Colombian Air Force reported that “an object” with “characteristics similar to those of a balloon” was detected and monitored “until it left the airspace.”

    US shoots down Chinese spying balloon on Biden's orders

    The United States Air Force Saturday shot down a spying balloon belonging to China while it was flying over territorial waters in the Atlantic Ocean, Washington confirmed. At the time it was shot down, it was reported to be about 18 km above sea level and 11 km off the coast.

    Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero Monday thanked his new Chinese colleague Qin Gang during a telephone conversation for the Asian Giant's support for the South American country's claim over the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. Qin Gang had become China's new Foreign Minister on Dec. 30, 2022. Both top diplomats concurred that a peaceful solution was needed for the South Atlantic dispute.
