  Elisha Kent Kane Society awards Gold Medal to Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust trustee Mensun Bound

  

  At a recent black-tie dinner in Manhattan, the Elisha Kent Kane Historical Society, presented its Gold Medal to Mensun Bound, Trustee of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT). The prestigious award was in recognition of his role in discovering Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance that sank beneath the ice of the Weddell Sea on 21 November 1915. The search, which was directed by the FMHT, working in close collaboration with the deep-water robotics company Ocean Infinity, found the wreck at a depth of 3008 m on 5 March 2022.

  Historic polar ship SS Terra Nova revisited in first-ever wreck survey

  

  An expedition led by the motor yacht MY Legend has completed the first visual survey of the wreck of the SS Terra Nova, offering new insight into one of the most emblematic ships of polar exploration. Located off the coast of Greenland, the wreck was first discovered in 2012, nearly 70 years after the ship sank during World War II.

  On 5th March 2022 the Endurance22 Expedition, organized and funded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, located the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s iconic three-masted polar sailing ship, Endurance, which had not been seen since it was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915. Among the team of Endurance 22 was Mensun Bound, a Falklands born maritime archeologist who was Director of Exploration.
