    “Electoral charade”: Maduro clings to power at all costs

    The Supreme Court of Justice issued a judgment ordering the exclusion of the opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) from the electoral process

    On December 20 the National Constituent Assembly (ANC) - formed only by pro-government officials - decreed that political parties that did not participate for the last regional election a few months ago must be revalidated before the National Electoral Council (CNE), a rule that according to the the current constitution should be should be applied when absenting more than 3 times to the suffrages.

    The National Constituent Assembly (ANC in Spanish) recommended to the Public Prosecutor and the Judicial Branch to release more than 80 political prisoners. At the moment, 13 of them have been released with precautionary measures.

    Leopoldo Lopez released from prison to house arrest

    Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, whose imprisonment has been a rallying cry for anti-regime demonstrators, has been released to house arrest because of health concerns, the nation's Supreme Court said Saturday morning. Lopez has been detained since early 2014 over accusations of inciting anti-government protests.

    Venezuelan opposition leader Rosmit Mantilla was released from jail late Thursday evening by the government of Nicolás Maduro. Mantilla was finally allowed to undergo surgery on November 13 and is believed to be one of the first political prisoners to be set free in the coming days.
