  Commemorative issue of South Georgia Wildlife stamps

  

  Two-hundred and fifty years ago, January 1775, Captain James Cook landed at Possession Bay and took possession of the island, in the name of King George III and his heirs. In this anniversary year we celebrate South Georgia and its change from a little known and little valued island to a thriving UK Overseas Territory which is globally renowned for championing science, conservation and sustainable management.

  Enhanced Marine Protected Area in South Georgia: No Take Zones expanded for krill and toothfish

  

  The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has announced that enhanced Marine Protection Area (MPA) measures officially come into force on 22nd Apri), following the signing of new legislation by Her Excellency the Commissioner, Alison Blake CMG.

  South Georgia expands by 36%, –166.000km2– area closed to fishing activities in its Southern Ocean MPA

  

  The Commissioner for South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) has announced plans to extend the spatial extent of No Take Zones in the SGSSI Marine Protected Area (MPA), increasing their area from 283,000km2 to 449,000km2.

  Operation Coldstare, air patrol in support of South Georgia's fisheries

  

  Last month the British Forces in South Atlantic Islands, BFSAI, stationed in Mount Pleasant Complex, MPC, were involved in the operation COLDSTARE as part of a routine maritime patrol in support of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands' rich fisheries resources.
